CHEEC is dedicated to developing advanced laboratory methods to identify and measure environmental contaminants. Our research spans various media, including surface water, groundwater, and air, with a particular focus on antibiotic-resistant genes (ARG) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), pesticides, metals, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Antibiotic-Resistant Genes (ARG) and Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (ARB): CHEEC is at the forefront of investigating the prevalence and concentrations of ARG and ARB in Iowa's streams and rivers. We employ both molecular and culture-based methods to detect and quantify these contaminants, providing crucial data on their distribution and potential health risks

Pesticides: Our research includes the development of methods to measure pesticides such as neonicotinoids in water and wastewater treatment systems. This work helps us understand the fate and transformation of these chemicals in the environment and their potential impact on human health.

Metals: CHEEC's studies on metals focus on their presence in various environmental media and their toxicological effects. For example, we have evaluated airborne particulates and associated metals from steel slag applied to rural unpaved roads, highlighting the potential health risks from inhalation exposure.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): Our work on PFAS involves developing and refining analytical methods to detect these persistent chemicals in water and air. PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals," are found in numerous consumer products and pose significant environmental and health challenges due to their persistence and bioaccumulation.

By advancing laboratory methods and collaborating with various research institutions, federal agencies, and state departments, CHEEC aims to provide accurate and reliable data on environmental contaminants. Our efforts contribute to a better understanding of these substances' impact on human health and the environment, ultimately promoting cleaner and safer communities.
