Drew Latta, PhD

Assistant Research Scientist
Biography

Dr. Latta is Director of the Iowa “Get the Lead Out” program through CHEEC that provides in-home drinking water tests for Iowans concerned about lead and other metals in their drinking water. He is Co-PI on projects focusing on understanding the factors that control Pb and Cu release to drinking water during corrosion of premise plumbing. Dr. Latta’s broader research explores the molecular-scale reactions that control water quality by modulating the solubility of metals, detoxifying organic contaminants, and transforming inorganic contaminants. Historically his work focused on mineral-mediated redox reactions that affect water quality by transforming contaminants via redox reactions and, more recently through his work at CHEEC, how these might impact human health through environmental exposures and in the body. He is also recognized for expertise in applying Mössbauer spectroscopy and other geochemical measurements to interrogate Fe mineralogy in natural soils and sediments and in engineered treatment systems.
